A gripping first-hand account of midwife Penny Armstrong’s journey from student midwife in Glasgow to running her own practice among the Amish in rural Pennsylvania, A Midwife’s Story never fails to enlighten, inform and surprise.
Going far beyond mere biography, Armstrong’s journey of self-discovery is ultimately very moving, and it is the honesty with which she describes the world she discovers which makes this book a classic, and essential reading not just for aspiring midwives but to anyone interested in natural birth.

The Amish are always a fascinating people and culture to read about. This book describes their way of life with compassion, love and understanding. The author dedicated her life to being a midwife, enduring rigorous training in both Scotland and the US inner city before finding her calling among the Amish. Sacrificing much that she cared about she, and soon her husband, moved to the Amish country and built their lives there. The book describes her many adventures as a midwife and among the caring people that she served tirelessly. There are few books that will call me back again and again to read more throughout the day. This one did that and more -- I was sometimes even shirking what I should be doing in order to read it. I was just sorry when it ended. A fascinating read into the lives of both the Amish and of their "English" midwife.Product details

A Midwife Story edition by Penny Armstrong Sheryl Feldman Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews
I found this an interesting story, especially because of where it takes place. Previously, I had known very little of the Amish way of life. I will say that it took me a long time to really get the flow of the story and characters. I am glad I "got into it", it was a worthwhile read.
This book is a wonderful addition to the Midwifery collection of stories. Penny Armstrong does a great job of telling like it is without a lot of political bluster or judgements. I enjoyed reading about how Penny got started in midwifery and the challenges she faced in the 1970's when midwifery was little understood and rapidly changing. This book also gives a person thinking about becoming a midwife a good overall feel of the practice of midwifery and some of the challenges you face and struggle through. Wonderful book.
I first learned about midwifery from Call the Midwife, and have since intended to read more books and real- life stories. This book is beautifully written, with lovely imagery; I felt as if I attended each scene and birth which she described! The author's change in perceptions toward the Amish was well written, and I now wish that I had some Amish neighbors to know and learn from.
I chose to rate this book as a five star because it is written with such love, such depth and a knowledge of and respect for a culture that was so different from her own.
I recommend this book for anyone who is expecting a baby and wants true in-site to home birthing. It is also a book for us hospital nurses to read, so we can explore the differences between giving birth in a sterile environment or giving birth in an environment that is familiar and comfortable.
A Midewife' s Story is also a look into the way of life of a culture so different from what we know. It is written with such respect and caring for the Amish, that when the reader finishes the book, there is a yearning to learn more.
I enjoyed Penny's journey as a midwife. Firstly training in Scotland and then making the decision to practice amongst the Amish community. The book was as much about the Amish as it was about midwifery. The book covered both very well. Penny and her husband settled into the Amish community and became accepted members. I enjoyed reading about the Amish as much as the midwifery stories.
LOVED, LOVED, LOVED it!!! So interesting to read about Amish customs and midwifery. I felt very connected to the author when she described her grandmother's kitchen environment in such lovely detail. I also felt like she was describing my own experience with a miscarriage. Beautifully written!
I loved this story. The midwife gave a good picture of the way women such as myself faced child birth in hospital settings with doctors to tend us. It was great to see the alternative way to bring new life into the world. We have come a long way in the methods now used to assist a mother in giving birth because of women like the midwife in our story. I loved being able to learn more about the Amish and their beliefs. I wanted to keep reading the book rather than doing the other millions of things that I must do. It was a great read, and I would love to have another story that continues where this one leaves off.
